Paraíba

Paraíba is one of the 26 states located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the states of Rio Grande do Norte to the north, Ceará to the west and southwest, and Pernambuco to the south. The state capital is João Pessoa, which is also the most populous city in the state.

The region of Paraíba was originally inhabited by indigenous Tupi tribes. The first European to explore the area was the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500. The state was officially established on August 5, 1585, with the founding of the city of João Pessoa.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Paraíba covers an area of approximately 56,469.778 square kilometers, making it the 21st largest state in Brazil. The state's terrain is characterized by coastal plains, rolling hills, and rugged highlands in the interior. The highest point in the state is the Pico do Jabre, which stands at 1,197 meters above sea level.

The economy of Paraíba is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, industry, and services. The state is known for its production of sugarcane, cotton, and tropical fruits. In the industrial sector, Paraíba has a strong presence in the textile, food processing, and chemical industries.

Popular dishes include baião de dois, a dish made with rice, beans, and meat; carne de sol, sun-dried beef; and tapioca, a starchy product made from cassava. The state is also known for its production of cachaça, a distilled spirit made from sugarcane.
