Patellofemoral syndrome

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Patellofemoral syndrome (also known as runner's knee) is a condition characterized by pain in the front of the knee and around the patella or kneecap. It is common in athletes and those who engage in physical activities that put stress on the knee joint.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The primary cause of patellofemoral syndrome is the excessive stress on the knee joint. This can occur due to overuse, injury, or muscle imbalances. Other factors that can contribute to the development of this condition include flat feet, misalignment of the kneecap, and weak or tight thigh muscles.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of patellofemoral syndrome is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee. This pain may be exacerbated by physical activities such as running, squatting, and climbing stairs. Other symptoms can include a feeling of instability in the knee, popping or grinding sensations in the knee, and pain after sitting for extended periods of time.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of patellofemoral syndrome is typically made through a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. The doctor may also order imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs to rule out other conditions that could be causing the knee pain.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for patellofemoral syndrome primarily involves conservative measures such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the RICE protocol). Physical therapy may also be recommended to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve flexibility. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to realign the kneecap or remove damaged cartilage.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention strategies for patellofemoral syndrome include maintaining a healthy weight, wearing supportive footwear, and engaging in regular exercise to strengthen the muscles that support the knee. It is also important to use proper form when engaging in physical activities to avoid putting unnecessary stress on the knee joint.
