The practice is most common in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and it is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM. The prevalence of FGM varies by country, with the highest rates found in Somalia, Guinea, Djibouti, and Egypt, where it is estimated that more than 90% of girls and women have undergone the procedure.
