Roger I. Glass

Roger I. Glass is an American physician and epidemiologist known for his significant contributions to the field of global health. He is currently the Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Roger I. Glass was born in New York City, New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Science. He then attended medical school at Harvard Medical School, earning his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Following his medical degree, Glass completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1984, Glass joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a medical epidemiologist in the Viral Gastroenteritis Unit. His research primarily focused on the epidemiology and prevention of gastroenteritis from rotaviruses and noroviruses, the leading causes of severe diarrheal disease in children worldwide.

In 2006, Glass was appointed Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In these roles, he oversees NIH's international research and training efforts.

Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]

Glass's research has significantly advanced our understanding of rotavirus infections and vaccines. His work has led to the development of new vaccines and strategies for the prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis, a major cause of child mortality in low-income countries.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Over his career, Glass has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to global health, including the Charles C. Shepard Science Award and the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Glass is married and has two children. He enjoys running and has completed several marathons.
