Saxman is a small city located in the U.S. state of Alaska, specifically in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. The city is known for its rich Tlingit heritage, which is prominently displayed through its many totem poles and the Saxman Totem Park.

The city of Saxman was named after a teacher named Samuel Saxman, who was lost at sea during a storm. The city was officially incorporated in 1929 and has since been a hub for Tlingit culture and history.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Saxman is located on Revillagigedo Island, part of the Alexander Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. The city covers a total area of 1.0 square mile, of which, 0.8 square miles of it is land and 0.2 square miles of it is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 411 people, 127 households, and 90 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was predominantly Native American, specifically of the Tlingit tribe.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Saxman is renowned for its Tlingit culture, particularly its totem poles. The Saxman Totem Park, a major tourist attraction, houses one of the largest collections of totem poles in Alaska. The city is also home to the Saxman Native Village, where visitors can learn about Tlingit culture and history.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Saxman is largely based on tourism, with many visitors coming to see the totem poles and learn about Tlingit culture. Other industries include fishing and local government.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Saxman is provided by the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District. The city is served by one elementary school, while middle and high school students attend schools in nearby Ketchikan.

Healthcare services in Saxman are provided by the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), which operates a clinic in the city.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Saxman is accessible by sea and air. The city is served by the Inter-Island Ferry Authority, which provides daily service to Ketchikan. The city is also served by the Ketchikan International Airport, which is located approximately 5 miles away.
