School nursing

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students. The concept of school nursing was first introduced in the United States in the late 19th century. Lina Rogers Struthers, a public health nurse, was the first school nurse in the United States, appointed in New York City in 1902. The primary role of early school nurses was to reduce absenteeism by intervening with students and families regarding healthcare needs related to communicable diseases.
