Shu Uemura (植村 秀, Uemura Shu, June 19, 1928 – December 29, 2007) was a pioneering Japanese makeup artist and the founder of the cosmetics line that bears his name, Shu Uemura Cosmetics. He is celebrated for transforming the realm of makeup into an art form, merging Eastern beauty techniques with Western makeup technology.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Shu Uemura showed an early interest in makeup and beauty, which was unusual for the time, especially among men. After graduating from the Tokyo Beauty Academy, Uemura entered the world of film makeup. His big break came while working on the 1962 Hollywood film My Geisha, where he stepped in for the lead makeup artist. His work caught the attention of Hollywood, and he quickly became a sought-after makeup artist for celebrities.

In 1967, Uemura launched his first cosmetics product, a cleansing oil that was revolutionary at the time. This product was the cornerstone for Shu Uemura Cosmetics, which he officially founded in 1983. The brand expanded globally, known for its innovative use of natural ingredients, and became a leader in the beauty industry. Shu Uemura's approach to makeup emphasized natural beauty, pioneering the philosophy that "beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin."

Uemura's philosophy was deeply rooted in the belief that makeup is not just about covering up imperfections but about revealing the natural beauty inherent in each individual. He was known for saying, "In the pursuit of beauty, one must be bold and go beyond the cosmetics floor." Uemura was also a pioneer in the field of makeup education, establishing the Shu Uemura Makeup Institute in Tokyo.

Shu Uemura is credited with several innovations in the beauty industry, including the first mass-market eyelash curler and the introduction of false eyelashes into everyday makeup routines.

Shu Uemura passed away on December 29, 2007, at the age of 79. His death marked the end of an era but also the beginning of a lasting legacy. Today, Shu Uemura Cosmetics continues to be a leading brand in the beauty industry, with products that embody Uemura's innovative spirit and dedication to beauty.
