Slidell was founded in 1882 by John William Gause, a Confederate soldier and entrepreneur. The city was named after John Slidell, a prominent politician and diplomat from Louisiana. Slidell grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its strategic location along the railroad and its proximity to New Orleans.
