Starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus) is a species of flatfish belonging to the family Pleuronectidae. It is native to the North Pacific Ocean, ranging from the Sea of Japan and the Bering Sea to Southern California, and possibly as far south as Baja California in Mexico. This species is notable for its distinctive star-shaped spots and its adaptability to both fresh and saltwater environments, making it a unique member of the flatfish family.

The starry flounder can be identified by its rough, bony ridges and distinctive, star-shaped spots. It has a broad, flattened body adapted for life on the sea floor. The coloration of the starry flounder varies with its environment, but it typically has a dark upper side and a white underside to camouflage itself from both predators and prey. This species can grow to a maximum length of about 91 cm (36 in) and weigh up to 9 kg (20 lb), although sizes around half of this are more common.

Starry flounders inhabit a wide range of environments from shallow, brackish waters to depths of up to 375 meters (1,230 ft) in the ocean. They are benthic fish, living on or near the bottom of water bodies. Their ability to tolerate a range of salinities allows them to inhabit estuaries, lagoons, and even venture into freshwater rivers.

The diet of the starry flounder consists mainly of invertebrates, such as worms, crustaceans, and small fish. They are opportunistic feeders, using their camouflaged appearance to ambush prey.

Starry flounders are oviparous, with females laying eggs that are fertilized externally. Spawning occurs in the spring and summer, with the exact timing depending on their geographic location. The larvae are planktonic, drifting with ocean currents until they are developed enough to settle on the bottom.

Starry flounders are targeted by both commercial and recreational fishers. They are caught using various methods, including trawling, gillnetting, and angling. Despite fishing pressure, their populations are considered stable, and they are not currently listed as endangered or threatened. However, monitoring is necessary to ensure sustainable management of this species.
