Sugar Busters!

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sugar Busters! is a low-carbohydrate diet and best-selling book by authors H. Leighton Steward, Morrison Bethea M.D., Sam Andrews M.D., and Luis Balart M.D. The diet emphasizes the elimination of high glycemic index carbohydrates, including many fruits, grains, and sugars.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Sugar Busters! diet is based on the theory that obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other ailments are caused by consuming too many high-glycemic carbohydrates. These carbohydrates, according to the authors, cause the body to produce excess insulin, which in turn causes weight gain and health problems.

The diet recommends avoiding foods with a high glycemic index, such as white bread, white rice, and potatoes. Instead, dieters are encouraged to eat lean meats, whole grains, fruits with a low glycemic index, and non-starchy vegetables.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The Sugar Busters! diet has been both praised and criticized. Supporters argue that the diet is effective for weight loss and improving health. Critics, however, argue that the diet is too restrictive and lacks scientific evidence.
