Suprapubic region

Suprapubic region is an anatomical term used to describe the area of the abdomen lying directly beneath the pubic bone. It is one of the nine regions of the abdomen, which are used by clinicians to help localize, diagnose, and treat abdominal conditions.

Anatomy

The suprapubic region, also known as the hypogastric region, is located inferior to the umbilical region and superior to the pubic symphysis. It is bordered laterally by the right iliac region and left iliac region. This region contains several important structures including part of the urinary bladder, sigmoid colon, and in females, the uterus and ovaries.

Clinical significance

The suprapubic region is often examined during a physical examination to assess for tenderness, masses, or distension. Pain in this region can be indicative of several conditions including urinary tract infection, appendicitis, diverticulitis, or gynecological disorders in females.

A suprapubic catheter is a common medical procedure where a catheter is inserted into the bladder through the suprapubic region to drain urine. This is often done when a patient is unable to urinate due to obstruction or nerve damage.
