Taborian Hospital

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Taborian Hospital was a historic hospital located in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. It was opened in 1942 by the International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor, a black fraternal organization. The hospital was staffed entirely by black doctors and nurses. It had state-of-the-art facilities, including operating rooms, an x-ray machine, incubators, and a blood bank. The hospital relied on membership dues and voluntary contributions for funding.

The first chief surgeon of Taborian Hospital was T. R. M. Howard, who later became a prominent civil rights leader in Mississippi. The hospital lost its fraternal status in 1967 when it was taken over by the federal government and renamed as the Mound Bayou Community Hospital. It eventually closed its doors in 1983.

In the 1990s, efforts began to renovate the original hospital building, which had been vacant for many years. In 2011, restoration work started to transform the building into a regional medical center. The renovated facility will include an urgent care facility that will utilize telemedicine in collaboration with the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Preservation of the building's historic integrity is a priority during the construction process.
