The Fugitive is an episode from the original 1959 television series The Twilight Zone. Airing on March 9, 1962, it was the 25th episode of the show's third season. The episode was written by Charles Beaumont, a prolific contributor to the series, and directed by Richard L. Bare, known for his work on both television and film.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story follows an old man named Ben, who is beloved by the neighborhood children for his ability to perform seemingly magical tricks. Among these children is a young girl named Jenny, who is disabled and finds a father figure in Ben. Unbeknownst to the children, Ben is actually a fugitive from another planet, hiding on Earth in the guise of an old man to escape from his royal responsibilities. His true identity is that of a king, who has grown tired of the pomp and circumstance of his position.

Ben's peaceful life on Earth is threatened when two alien pursuers arrive, intent on bringing him back to fulfill his duties as king. In a twist characteristic of The Twilight Zone, it is revealed that Ben's ability to perform magic is real, stemming from his alien nature. Despite his desire to stay on Earth, Ben realizes he must confront his responsibilities and return to his home planet.

In a final act of kindness, and to ensure Jenny will remember him fondly, Ben uses his powers to heal her disability. The episode concludes with Ben's departure, leaving behind a community that has been touched by his presence and a young girl whose life he has changed forever.

Themes[edit | edit source]
