Trimix (injection)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Trimix (injection) is a medication used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. It is a compound medication that consists of three active ingredients: papaverine, phentolamine, and prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil). Trimix is administered as an intracavernosal injection, meaning it is directly injected into the penile tissue to induce an erection.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Trimix is composed of three vasodilators which have different mechanisms of action:

  • Papaverine is a non-specific phosphodiesterase inhibitor that leads to increased levels of cAMP and cGMP, resulting in vasodilation and erection.
  • Phentolamine is an alpha-adrenergic blocker that also contributes to the vasodilation effect.
  • Prostaglandin E1 (Alprostadil) works by relaxing smooth muscle tissue in the penis, further enhancing blood flow to create an erection.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Trimix is primarily indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction that has not responded to less invasive treatments such as oral medications like sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis). It is often considered when patients have contraindications to these oral medications or have experienced insufficient effects from them.

Administration[edit | edit source]

The medication is administered through self-injection into the penile corpora cavernosa. The dose of Trimix is tailored to the individual patient's response and tolerance. It is crucial for patients to receive proper instruction from a healthcare provider on how to safely administer the injection to avoid complications such as priapism (a prolonged erection) or fibrosis (scarring) of the penile tissue.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Trimix include pain at the injection site, bruising, and fibrosis. Priapism, a prolonged erection lasting more than four hours, is a serious side effect that requires immediate medical attention to prevent permanent damage.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Trimix should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components. It is also contraindicated in men who are at risk of priapism, such as those with sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or multiple myeloma. Additionally, it should be used with caution in patients with penile anatomical deformations.
