University of Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is a comprehensive public research university. It was founded on March 30, 1910, as Mississippi Normal College, a teacher training school. Over the years, USM has grown significantly and now offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across various disciplines, including the arts, sciences, business, health, and education.

The institution was established with the primary aim of training teachers in the southern part of Mississippi. In 1924, the college's name was changed to State Teachers College, reflecting its expanded role in teacher education. The name changed again in 1940 to Mississippi Southern College as the institution broadened its academic offerings beyond teacher education. Finally, in 1962, it achieved university status and adopted its current name, the University of Southern Mississippi.

USM's main campus is in Hattiesburg, with a second campus located in Long Beach, Mississippi, known as the Gulf Park campus.
