20β-Dihydroprogesterone

20β-Dihydroprogesterone is synthesized from progesterone in the corpus luteum and the placenta by the enzyme 20β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This enzyme catalyzes the reduction of the keto group at the 20 position of progesterone to a hydroxyl group, resulting in the formation of 20β-dihydroprogesterone.

20β-Dihydroprogesterone has been found to possess progestogenic activity, similar to that of progesterone. It is involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle and plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy. It also has a role in the development of the embryo and fetus during pregnancy.
