Alkylbenzenes can be synthesized through various methods, with Friedel-Crafts alkylation being one of the most common. Another method is the catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons, where an alkyl group is directly added to the benzene ring.

Alkylbenzenes have a wide range of applications, primarily in the production of detergents, plastics, and other synthetic materials. Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are especially important in the manufacture of biodegradable detergents, as they break down more easily in the environment compared to their branched counterparts. Alkylbenzenes are also used as solvents, intermediates in organic synthesis, and in the production of lubricants and other chemicals.

While alkylbenzenes are valuable in various industrial applications, they also pose environmental and health risks.
