Azolla is a genus of aquatic ferns in the family Salviniaceae. Often referred to as mosquito fern, duckweed fern, fairy moss, or water fern, Azolla species are notable for their small size and their ability to form dense mats on the surface of bodies of water. They are found in a variety of freshwater environments around the world, from stagnant ponds to slow-moving rivers. Azolla plays a significant role in its ecosystem, providing habitat for aquatic life, serving as a food source for various animals, and contributing to the nitrogen cycle through its symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae.

Azolla species are small, floating ferns that rarely exceed 2.5 cm in length. Their leaves are arranged in a bilobed manner, with one lobe floating on the water surface and the other submerged. This unique structure aids in flotation and photosynthesis. The roots of Azolla hang in the water, absorbing nutrients directly from their aquatic environment.

Symbiosis with Anabaena azollae[edit | edit source]

One of the most fascinating aspects of Azolla is its symbiotic relationship with the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae. This relationship allows Azolla to grow in nitrogen-poor waters, as Anabaena azollae converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that the plant can use. This capability has led to Azolla being used as a green fertilizer in rice paddies, especially in Asia, improving soil fertility and rice yields.

Azolla plays a crucial role in its ecosystem. It provides a habitat for microfauna, offering a breeding ground and shelter for various aquatic organisms. Additionally, Azolla mats can reduce the evaporation of water from bodies of water, help control the growth of algae by shading the water surface, and absorb pollutants, thus improving water quality.

Beyond its ecological benefits, Azolla has several practical applications. It has been used as a biofertilizer in agriculture due to its nitrogen-fixing capabilities. In some regions, Azolla is used as feed for livestock and fish, as it is rich in proteins and essential nutrients. Furthermore, research is ongoing into its potential as a biofuel source, given its high growth rate and biomass production.

While Azolla species are widespread and not currently considered endangered, their habitats are threatened by pollution, water drainage, and climate change. Conservation efforts are necessary to preserve these unique aquatic ecosystems and the benefits they provide to both nature and humanity.
