CFP-10

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

CFP-10 (Culture Filtrate Protein 10 kDa) is a protein secreted by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. It is a major antigen in the Mantoux test, which is used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Function[edit | edit source]

CFP-10 is a secreted protein that is part of the ESAT-6 (early secretory antigenic target, 6 kDa) family. This protein is secreted by the ESX-1 (ESAT-6 system 1) secretion system in pathogenic mycobacteria. The ESX-1 secretion system is involved in the virulence and pathogenicity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Role in Tuberculosis[edit | edit source]

CFP-10, along with ESAT-6, is a major antigen in the Mantoux test for tuberculosis. The presence of these antigens in the body indicates an infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Mantoux test involves injecting a small amount of these antigens under the skin and observing the body's immune response.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

CFP-10 and ESAT-6 are also used in the Interferon Gamma Release Assays (IGRAs), which are blood tests used to diagnose tuberculosis. These tests measure the immune response to the antigens in the blood. The presence of a strong immune response indicates an active tuberculosis infection.
