Dante B. Fascell (March 9, 1917 – November 28, 1998) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Florida from 1955 to 1993. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Fascell was born in Bridgehampton, New York. He moved to Florida with his family in 1925. He attended the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938 and a Juris Doctor in 1948.

Military Service[edit | edit source]

During World War II, Fascell served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1946. He was stationed in the European Theater of Operations and achieved the rank of Captain.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Fascell was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1954, representing Florida's 4th congressional district. He later represented the 12th and 19th districts due to redistricting. During his tenure, he was known for his work on foreign affairs and was a key figure in the creation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Committee Work[edit | edit source]

Fascell served as the chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1993. He played a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War and was instrumental in the passage of the Foreign Assistance Act.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Fascell's contributions to U.S. foreign policy and his long tenure in Congress have left a lasting impact. The Dante B. Fascell North-South Center at the University of Miami is named in his honor.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Fascell was married to Jean-Marie Pelot, and they had three children. He passed away on November 28, 1998, in Clearwater, Florida.
