Global Handwashing Day

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Global Handwashing Day is an international handwashing promotion campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits. Washing hands at key times with soap and water is one of the most important steps that can be taken to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The official Global Handwashing Day is celebrated annually on October 15. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of handwashing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

History[edit | edit source]

The first Global Handwashing Day was held in 2008, when over 120 million children around the world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. Since then, it has grown into a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases. The initiative was developed by the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP), formerly known as the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW), and is endorsed by a wide array of governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies, and individuals.

It significantly reduces the spread of diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections, which are among the leading causes of death in children under five years old. Handwashing can also prevent the spread of other infections, including the flu and the common cold.
