Health Resources and Services Administration

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HRSA is the primary federal agency for improving health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable. The agency's mission is to improve health outcomes and address health disparities through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs.

HRSA was established in 1982, bringing together several existing programs to form a single agency focused on health resources and services. The agency's creation was part of a broader effort to streamline and improve the efficiency of federal health programs.

Health Center Program[edit | edit source]

The Health Center Program supports nearly 1,400 health centers operating more than 12,000 service delivery sites in communities across the country. These centers provide primary care services to millions of people, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides a comprehensive system of care for people living with HIV, including primary medical care, essential support services, and medications.

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) works to improve the health and well-being of America's mothers, children, and families. MCHB administers programs that address a wide range of health issues, from prenatal care to adolescent health.

HRSA's Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) promotes better health care services in rural America. FORHP works to increase access to care, improve health outcomes, and reduce health disparities in rural communities.

National Health Service Corps[edit | edit source]

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) offers financial support to health care providers who commit to working in underserved areas. The NHSC provides scholarships and loan repayment programs to encourage health professionals to serve in communities with limited access to care.

Organ Donation and Transplantation[edit | edit source]

HRSA's Division of Transplantation oversees the national system for organ donation and transplantation. The division works to increase the number of organs available for transplantation and to ensure that the system operates fairly and efficiently.
