How to edit a page

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

How to Edit a Page is a fundamental skill for contributors to any MediaWiki-based website, including the vast and diverse encyclopedia, WikiMD. Editing pages is essential for the growth and accuracy of the wiki, allowing users to add, modify, and improve content. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the editing process, from basic edits to more advanced formatting and linking techniques.

Getting Started[edit | edit source]

Before editing a page, it's important to familiarize yourself with the MediaWiki interface and the principles that guide the community's contributions. Ensure you have an account and are logged in to make edits. This not only allows you to track your contributions but also helps the community in collaborative editing.

Basic Editing[edit | edit source]

To edit a page, click on the "Edit" tab at the top of the page. This will open the editor where you can make changes to the text. MediaWiki uses a simple markup language to format text, create links, and manage other content types.

Text Formatting[edit | edit source]

To format text, you can use simple markup codes:

  • Bold text is created by surrounding words with three apostrophes: Bold
  • Italic text is made with two apostrophes: Italic
  • Headings and subheadings are created by placing equal signs around a title: == Heading == for main headings, === Subheading === for sub-levels.

Creating Links[edit | edit source]

Internal links to other pages within the wiki are created using double square brackets:

Advanced Editing[edit | edit source]

Advanced editing techniques include adding lists, inserting images, and using templates.

Lists[edit | edit source]

You can create bulleted or numbered lists using asterisks (*) or number signs (#):

  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  1. First
  2. Second

Templates[edit | edit source]

Templates are used to insert common snippets of content or formatting. To use a template, enclose the template name within double curly braces: Template:TemplateName. For example, to mark a page as a stub, you would add

at the bottom of the page.

Saving Your Edits[edit | edit source]

Before saving your edits, it's a good practice to preview your changes using the "Show preview" button. This allows you to see how your edits will look without actually saving them. Once satisfied, you can save your changes by clicking the "Save changes" button and optionally adding a brief summary of your edits.

Discussion and Collaboration[edit | edit source]

Each page has an associated "Talk" page, accessible by clicking the "Talk" tab. This is where editors discuss improvements, ask questions, and resolve conflicts. Engaging in talk pages is a key aspect of the collaborative nature of wikis.
