Hulda Crooks

Hulda Crooks (May 19, 1896 – November 23, 1997) was an American mountaineer and hiker who became known for her remarkable achievements in mountain climbing later in life. She is often referred to as "Grandma Whitney" for her numerous ascents of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

Early Life

Hulda Hoehn Crooks was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, and later moved to the United States. She pursued a career in nursing and dietetics, eventually becoming a professor at Loma Linda University in California.

Mountaineering Career

Crooks began her mountaineering career at the age of 66, after the death of her husband. She became an inspiration to many for her determination and physical fitness. Over the years, she climbed Mount Whitney 23 times, with her last ascent at the age of 91. She also climbed 97 other peaks in the Sierra Nevada range.

Legacy

In recognition of her achievements, a peak in the Sierra Nevada was named Crooks Peak in her honor. Additionally, she was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 1999.

Personal Life

Hulda Crooks was a devout Seventh-day Adventist and credited her faith and lifestyle for her longevity and physical abilities. She was also a strong advocate for vegetarianism and healthy living.

Death

Hulda Crooks passed away on November 23, 1997, at the age of 101.
