Hulusi Behçet (20 February 1889 – 8 March 1948) was a Turkish dermatologist and scientist who is best known for his discovery of Behçet's disease. He was a prominent figure in the field of dermatology and venereology in Turkey and made significant contributions to medical science.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Hulusi Behçet was born in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, in 1889. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul. Behçet pursued his medical education at the Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine, where he graduated in 1910.

After completing his medical education, Behçet specialized in dermatology and venereology. He worked in various hospitals in Turkey and abroad, including a stint in Budapest, Hungary, where he furthered his studies in dermatology.

In 1933, Behçet was appointed as a professor at the Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine, where he continued his research and teaching until his death. He was also a member of several international dermatological societies and contributed to numerous medical journals.

Discovery of Behçet's Disease[edit | edit source]

Hulusi Behçet is most renowned for his identification of Behçet's disease, a chronic condition characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers and uveitis. In 1937, Behçet published his findings on the disease, which was later named after him in recognition of his work.
