ICD-10
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) is the tenth edition of a medical classification system established by the World Health Organization (WHO). This system is widely used in the field of medicine and healthcare to create a universal standard for the classification and reporting of diseases, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury or diseases[1].
Structure and Purpose of ICD-10
The ICD-10 system is comprised of alphanumeric codes, each corresponding to a specific health condition or related issues. These codes facilitate efficient and precise documentation and communication of medical conditions on a global scale, which is essential for epidemiological studies, health management, and clinical purposes. This standardization is particularly vital for healthcare quality assessment, resource allocation, and reimbursement systems[2].
Uses and Applications
ICD-10 is utilized in many aspects of healthcare and medical research. Here are a few key areas:
- Clinical Care: The codes assist in recording diagnoses and procedures in patient records, helping clinicians track a patient's condition, and plan for future care.
- Research: ICD-10 codes provide a consistent method for categorizing and studying diseases, leading to breakthroughs in disease prevention and treatment.
- Healthcare Administration: The system is crucial for health management purposes, such as tracking the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems, both nationally and globally.
- Billing and Reimbursement: ICD-10 codes are integral to the billing process, with specific codes corresponding to certain medical services for reimbursement purposes.
Transition to ICD-11
The World Health Organization (WHO) introduced the 11th revision of ICD (ICD-11) in June 2018, which will eventually replace ICD-10. The new version contains major improvements and changes, focusing on simplification and ease of use. However, as of now, many healthcare institutions worldwide continue to use ICD-10 due to the extensive infrastructure changes required for the transition[3].
