IMDb

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

IMDb (Internet Movie Database) is an online database of information related to films, television programs, home videos, video games, and streaming content online – including cast, production crew and personal biographies, plot summaries, trivia, ratings, and fan and critical reviews.

History[edit | edit source]

IMDb originated with a Usenet posting by British film fan and computer programmer Col Needham entitled "Those Eyes", about actresses with beautiful eyes. Later on, the idea of creating a movie database came into existence. IMDb was incorporated in the United Kingdom, growing out of the Usenet group "rec.arts.movies", and launched on the web in 1993.

Features[edit | edit source]

IMDb offers a variety of features and services. It provides comprehensive movie info, including reviews, ratings, biographies, and more. Users can contribute new material and updates to existing entries. There are also features such as the top 250 rated movies by IMDb users, and the most popular movies as rated by IMDb users.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

IMDb is currently owned by Amazon, which bought it in 1998. Amazon uses IMDb as an advertising resource for selling DVDs and videotapes.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

IMDb has been subject to controversy throughout its history. The site's policies and practices, particularly those concerning its alleged lack of transparency, have been the subject of criticism. It has also been criticized for its rating system, which some believe is biased or manipulated.
