Mammoplasty

Mammoplasty is a general term for a group of surgical procedures which modify the size, shape, or position of the breasts. The term is derived from the Greek words mastos (breast) and plastos (formed). Mammoplasty can be divided into four main types: augmentation mammoplasty, reduction mammoplasty, mastopexy (breast lift), and reconstructive mammoplasty.

Augmentation Mammoplasty

Augmentation mammoplasty, also known as breast augmentation, is a procedure that involves the insertion of breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of the breasts. This procedure can also restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy, achieve a more rounded breast shape or improve natural breast size asymmetry.

Reduction Mammoplasty

Reduction mammoplasty, also known as breast reduction, is a procedure to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. This can also help to alleviate physical discomfort such as neck and back pain, and skin irritation.

Mastopexy

Mastopexy, or breast lift, is a procedure that raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. This can also include repositioning the nipple and areola.

Reconstructive Mammoplasty

Reconstructive mammoplasty is a procedure performed to reconstruct the breast mound after a mastectomy, an operation to remove a breast or part of it. This can be done at the same time as the mastectomy, or it can be done later.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgical procedures, mammoplasty carries some risks. These can include infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, poor healing of incisions, and complications related to anesthesia. It's important to discuss these risks with your doctor before the procedure.
