It is believed to be a seedling of the Haden mango, which was one of the first mango varieties to be widely grown in Florida. The Osteen mango gained commercial importance due to its desirable fruit qualities and disease resistance.

The Osteen mango is medium to large in size, typically weighing between 12 to 24 ounces. The fruit has an oval to oblong shape with a slightly flattened appearance. The skin is thick and smooth, turning a deep purple to red color when ripe, often with a yellow or orange blush. The flesh is firm, fiberless, and has a rich, sweet flavor with a hint of acidity. The seed is monoembryonic, meaning it produces a single seedling.

Osteen mango trees are vigorous growers and can reach heights of up to 30 feet. They are well-suited to the subtropical climate of Florida and are relatively resistant to common mango diseases such as anthracnose and powdery mildew.
