The fat and connective tissue that surrounds the uterus.

Function[edit | edit source]

The parametrium helps connect the uterus to other tissues in the pelvis.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

This connective tissue separates the supravaginal portion of the cervix from the bladder.

The uterine artery

Boundaries[edit | edit source]

  • The parametrium lies in front of the cervix and extends laterally between the layers of the broad ligaments.
  • Parametrium connects the uterus to other tissues in the pelvis.
  • Parametrium is different from the perimetrium, which is the outermost layer of the uterus.

Contents[edit | edit source]

The uterine artery and ovarian ligament are located in the parametrium.

Parametritis[edit | edit source]

An associated form of pelvic inflammatory disease is inflammation of the parametrium known as parametritis.

Use in cancer therapy[edit | edit source]

Parametrium can be used to place radium implant in the treatment of Stage IIIB carcinoma of the cervix
