The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is a professional body in the United Kingdom for general practitioners (GPs). It was founded in 1952 with the aim of promoting excellence in primary healthcare. The RCGP is responsible for setting standards in general practice and for the training and education of GPs.

History[edit | edit source]

The RCGP was established in 1952 by a group of general practitioners who recognized the need for a professional body to represent their interests and to promote high standards in general practice. The college was granted a royal charter in 1972, which formally recognized its role in the medical profession.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The main objectives of the RCGP are to improve the quality of patient care, to promote and support research in general practice, and to provide education and training for GPs. The college also aims to influence healthcare policy and to represent the views of GPs to the government and other organizations.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership of the RCGP is open to qualified GPs and to those in training. There are different categories of membership, including Associate, Member, and Fellow. Members are entitled to use the post-nominal letters MRCGP, while Fellows use FRCGP.

Education and Training[edit | edit source]

The RCGP is responsible for the MRCGP examination, which is a requirement for all GPs wishing to practice in the UK. The college also provides a range of educational resources and training programs for GPs at all stages of their careers.

Research[edit | edit source]

The RCGP supports and promotes research in general practice through its Research and Surveillance Centre. The college publishes a number of journals, including the British Journal of General Practice.

Policy and Advocacy[edit | edit source]

The RCGP plays a key role in influencing healthcare policy in the UK. It works with the government, National Health Service (NHS), and other organizations to ensure that the views of GPs are represented in policy decisions.

Headquarters[edit | edit source]

The headquarters of the RCGP is located at 30 Euston Square, London. The building provides a range of facilities for members, including meeting rooms, a library, and a conference center.
