Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Nicks (born May 26, 1948) is an American singer and songwriter, best known for her work with the band Fleetwood Mac and her successful solo career. Nicks is known for her distinctive voice, mystical stage persona, and poetic, symbolic lyrics.

Early Life

Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Jess Nicks, a corporate executive, and Barbara Nicks, a homemaker. She developed an interest in music at an early age, influenced by her grandfather, a country music singer. Nicks received her first guitar at the age of 16 and began writing songs.

Career

Early Career

Nicks met Lindsey Buckingham during her senior year at Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California. The two formed the band Fritz with two other friends, and they gained a following in the San Francisco Bay Area. After Fritz disbanded in 1972, Nicks and Buckingham continued to collaborate, eventually releasing the album Buckingham Nicks in 1973.

Fleetwood Mac

In 1975, Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac, a British-American rock band. The addition of Nicks and Buckingham marked a turning point for the band, leading to the release of the highly successful album Fleetwood Mac. Nicks' song "Rhiannon" became one of the band's most iconic tracks.

The band's next album, Rumours (1977), became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Nicks contributed several songs to the album, including "Dreams", which became the band's only number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Solo Career

Nicks launched her solo career in 1981 with the release of Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard 200 and included hits like "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", a duet with Tom Petty. She continued to release successful solo albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including The Wild Heart (1983), Rock a Little (1985), and The Other Side of the Mirror (1989).

Later Career

Nicks has continued to tour and release new music into the 21st century. Her 2011 album In Your Dreams received critical acclaim. In 2014, she released 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, an album of re-recorded demos from earlier in her career.

Personal Life

Nicks has been open about her struggles with addiction and has been sober since the mid-1990s. She has never married and has no children, but she has had several high-profile relationships, including with Lindsey Buckingham and Don Henley of Eagles.
