The University of Missouri (often referred to as Mizzou) is a public university located in Columbia, Missouri. It is the flagship institution of the University of Missouri System and was founded in 1839. The university is known for its strong programs in journalism, medicine, law, and business.
History[edit | edit source]
The University of Missouri was established in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River. It was founded in response to the Geyer Act, which provided for the establishment of a state university. The university's first building, Academic Hall, was completed in 1843 but was destroyed by fire in 1892. The iconic Columns are the only remaining part of the original building and are a symbol of the university.

The University of Missouri offers more than 300 degree programs through its 13 colleges and schools, including the College of Arts and Science, the School of Journalism, the School of Law, and the School of Medicine. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The Missouri School of Journalism is one of the oldest and most prestigious journalism schools in the world. It was founded in 1908 by Walter Williams and is known for its "Missouri Method" of hands-on training.
School of Medicine[edit | edit source]
The University of Missouri School of Medicine was established in 1872 and is known for its innovative curriculum and research. The school offers both MD and PhD programs.

The University of Missouri's main campus is located in Columbia, covering 1,262 acres. The campus is home to several historic buildings, including Jesse Hall, Switzler Hall, and the Francis Quadrangle. The Mizzou Botanic Garden is also located on campus, featuring a variety of plant species and gardens.
Athletics[edit | edit source]
The University of Missouri's athletic teams are known as the Missouri Tigers. They compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and have a strong tradition in football, basketball, and wrestling. The university's mascot is Truman the Tiger.
