West Virginia University
West Virginia University (WVU) is a public land-grant university located in Morgantown, West Virginia. It was established in 1867 and is the flagship institution of the West Virginia University System. WVU offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs.

West Virginia University was founded on February 7, 1867, under the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862, which provided for the establishment of land-grant colleges. The university was originally named the Agricultural College of West Virginia and was renamed West Virginia University in 1868.
Campus[edit | edit source]
The main campus of WVU is located in Morgantown, which is divided into three distinct sections: the Downtown Campus, the Evansdale Campus, and the Health Sciences Campus. The university also operates regional campuses in Beckley and Keyser.
Downtown Campus[edit | edit source]
The Downtown Campus is the original and oldest part of WVU. It houses many of the university's academic buildings, libraries, and administrative offices. Notable buildings include Woodburn Hall, the Mountainlair student union, and the Downtown Library.
Evansdale Campus[edit | edit source]
The Evansdale Campus is home to the university's engineering, agriculture, and creative arts programs. It includes the Evansdale Library, the Creative Arts Center, and the Engineering Sciences Building.
Health Sciences Campus[edit | edit source]
The Health Sciences Campus is located near the West Virginia University Hospitals and includes the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, which houses the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, and School of Pharmacy.

WVU offers over 350 degree programs across 14 colleges and schools. Some of the notable colleges include the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, and the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
Research[edit | edit source]
West Virginia University is classified as an R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university conducts research in various fields, including energy, health sciences, and biometrics.
Athletics[edit | edit source]
WVU's athletic teams are known as the West Virginia Mountaineers. They compete in the Big 12 Conference and have a strong tradition in sports such as football, basketball, and rifle. The university's main athletic facilities include Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, the WVU Coliseum, and the Mountaineer Track.
