The foundation was established by Jimmy Wales on June 20, 2003, to support the operations of Wikipedia and its sister projects.

History[edit | edit source]

The Wikimedia Foundation was created to manage the growing needs of Wikipedia, which was launched in January 2001. As Wikipedia's popularity and content grew, the need for a dedicated organization to handle its operations became apparent. The foundation was incorporated in St. Petersburg, Florida, and later moved its headquarters to San Francisco.
