Winston-Salem is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is the county seat of Forsyth County and the fifth-largest city in the state. Winston-Salem is known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and southern hospitality.

Winston-Salem was formed in 1913 from the merger of the towns of Winston and Salem. The town of Salem was established by Moravian settlers in 1766, while Winston was founded in 1849 and named after a local Revolutionary War hero, Joseph Winston. The city played a significant role in the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.

Winston-Salem is often referred to as the "City of Arts and Innovation" due to its commitment to fine arts and technological research. It is home to several large businesses, including HanesBrands, BB&T, and Krispy Kreme. The city is also a hub for the tobacco industry, with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company having its headquarters here.

As of the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 229,617, making it the fifth most populous city in North Carolina.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The city is served by the Winston-Salem Transit Authority, which operates a system of bus routes throughout Winston-Salem. The city is also served by Smith Reynolds Airport and is located near several major highways, including Interstate 40 and Interstate 85.
