Zeng Jinlian (June 26, 1964 – February 13, 1982) was a Chinese woman recognized as the tallest female ever recorded in modern times. She is one of only seventeen known cases in medical history where a female reached or surpassed eight feet in height. Zeng Jinlian's remarkable stature was due to gigantism and acromegaly, conditions resulting from an overproduction of growth hormone. Her height was officially measured at 8 feet 1.75 inches (248.3 cm) at the time of her death, making her the tallest woman verified by the Guinness World Records.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Zeng Jinlian was born in Yujiang County in the Jiangxi Province of China. From an early age, she displayed an abnormal growth pattern, standing over 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm) tall by the age of four. Her rapid growth was attributed to a pituitary gland tumor that caused excessive secretion of growth hormone. Despite medical attention, her condition was not adequately controlled, leading to her extraordinary height.

Health Issues[edit | edit source]

Zeng's incredible height came with numerous health complications. She suffered from severe spinal curvature (scoliosis) and could not stand up straight. Instead, she moved about in a stooped position. Her mobility was further compromised by weakness in her legs, making walking difficult and painful. These health issues significantly impacted her quality of life and limited her daily activities.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Zeng Jinlian passed away on February 13, 1982, at the young age of 17. Her death was attributed to complications related to her condition, including diabetes and respiratory and circulatory issues. Despite her short life, Zeng Jinlian left a lasting legacy in the field of medical science, providing valuable insights into the effects of extreme growth hormone levels on the human body.

Her life has been the subject of various medical studies and she is often mentioned in discussions about human growth disorders. Zeng's case continues to fascinate both the medical community and the general public, serving as a poignant reminder of the diversity of human conditions.
