Crack

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Crack is a form of cocaine that has been processed to make a rock crystal that can be smoked. The crystal is heated to produce vapors that are absorbed into the blood-stream through the lungs. The term "crack" refers to the crackling sound heard when it is heated.

History[edit | edit source]

Crack cocaine was first developed during the cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. Its popularity was due to its immediate high and the low cost in comparison to powdered cocaine.

Effects[edit | edit source]

Crack cocaine delivers an intensity of pleasure beyond the reach of normal human experience. However, it is highly addictive and its effects are short-lived, leading to repeated use. The physical effects can include heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, and seizures. Long-term effects can include severe damage to the heart, liver and brain.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for crack cocaine addiction often involves a combination of physical and psychological therapy. This can include detoxification, counseling and 12-step programs. Medications are also sometimes used to help manage withdrawal symptoms.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

In many countries, including the United States, crack cocaine is illegal. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking can be severe.
