Domestic Terrorism

Domestic Terrorism is a term used to describe acts of violence, threats of violence, or other unlawful activities that are committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or its territories, and that are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion, or affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines domestic terrorism as activities that involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any state; appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion, or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

Types of Domestic Terrorism[edit | edit source]

There are several types of domestic terrorism, including but not limited to:

Right-wing terrorism - This form of domestic terrorism is linked to racially motivated violent extremism, such as white supremacy, and anti-government/anti-authority violent extremism.
Left-wing terrorism - This form of domestic terrorism is linked to anarchist violent extremism, and other ideologies seeking to bring about change through violent revolution.
Single-issue terrorism - This form of domestic terrorism involves criminal acts by individuals or groups advocating for a specific cause, such as animal rights or environmental rights.

The prevention of domestic terrorism involves a multi-faceted approach that includes intelligence gathering, law enforcement operations, and community outreach. The response to domestic terrorism often involves the coordination of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as the use of legal tools such as terrorism charges and hate crime laws.
