Endophilic

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Endophilic is a term used in epidemiology and parasitology to describe the behavior of mosquitoes that rest indoors after feeding. This behavior is significant in the transmission of diseases such as malaria.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Endophilic mosquitoes are those that prefer to rest indoors after feeding. This behavior is in contrast to exophilic mosquitoes, which rest outdoors after feeding. The endophilic behavior of certain mosquito species is a significant factor in the transmission of diseases such as malaria.

Significance in Disease Transmission[edit | edit source]

Endophilic behavior is particularly significant in the transmission of malaria. After feeding on a human host, an endophilic mosquito will rest indoors, often on the walls of homes. During this resting period, the mosquito digests its blood meal and develops eggs. If the mosquito has ingested the plasmodium parasite, which causes malaria, during its blood meal, the parasite will also develop during this resting period.

When the mosquito feeds again, it can transmit the parasite to its next human host. Because endophilic mosquitoes rest indoors, they are more likely to feed on humans again, increasing the chances of disease transmission.

Control Measures[edit | edit source]

Control measures for endophilic mosquitoes often involve indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides. IRS involves the application of insecticide to the interior walls of homes, where endophilic mosquitoes are likely to rest. This can kill the mosquitoes before they have a chance to transmit disease.

Other control measures include the use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs), which can kill mosquitoes that come into contact with them, and source reduction, which involves eliminating the places where mosquitoes breed.
