Ganglionic
Ganglionic refers to the pertaining or relating to a ganglion. A ganglion is a structure containing a number of nerve cell bodies, typically linked by synapses, and often forming a swelling on a nerve fiber.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Ganglionic, in medical terms, is used to describe anything that is related to a ganglion. A ganglion is a group of nerve cells that form a nerve center, usually located outside the brain and spinal cord. Ganglions can be found in various parts of the body and are responsible for transmitting nerve impulses.
Types of Ganglions[edit | edit source]
There are several types of ganglions in the human body, including:
- Dorsal root ganglion: This is a cluster of nerve cell bodies (a ganglion) in a dorsal root of a spinal nerve. The dorsal root ganglion contains the cell bodies of nerve cells (neurons) that bring information from the periphery to the spinal cord.
- Autonomic ganglion: These are clusters of nerve cell bodies in the autonomic nervous system. They transmit nerve impulses to smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, and glands.
- Basal ganglia: These are a group of structures in the brain that are involved in various processes, including motor control and learning.
Ganglionic Disorders[edit | edit source]
There are several disorders that can affect the ganglions, including:
- Ganglion cyst: This is a noncancerous lump, often on the hand or wrist. Ganglion cysts can also appear on feet, ankles, knees, or shoulders. A ganglion cyst might appear suddenly, grow slowly, and vary in size.
- Ganglioneuroma: This is a rare, benign tumor that originates from nerve cells and is most commonly found in the adrenal glands.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for ganglionic disorders depends on the specific disorder and may include medication, physical therapy, or surgery. For example, a ganglion cyst might not need treatment if it's not causing any symptoms, but it can be removed surgically if it's painful or causing other problems.
