Garden heliotrope

Garden Heliotrope (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant in the family Valerianaceae. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia but is also grown in North America for its medicinal properties. The plant is also known as common valerian and is highly valued for its sedative, antispasmodic, migraine treatment, and pain relieving properties.

Description

The Garden Heliotrope grows up to 1.5 meters high and produces sweetly scented pink or white flowers that attract many fly species, especially hoverflies of the genus Eristalis. The flowers are in bloom in the northern hemisphere from June to September.

Medicinal Uses

The root of the Garden Heliotrope is used in herbal medicine to treat a variety of ailments. It is most commonly used as a sleep aid and anxiety reliever. Other uses include the treatment of digestive problems, relief of menstrual discomfort, and as a treatment for headaches and migraines.

Cultivation

Garden Heliotrope prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate a variety of soil conditions.
