Granular cell

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Granular cell is a type of cell that is characterized by its granular appearance under the microscope. These cells are found in various parts of the body and are involved in different physiological processes. Granular cells are often associated with certain diseases, such as Granular cell tumor and Granular cell myoblastoma.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Granular cells are named for their appearance, as they contain numerous granules in their cytoplasm. These granules are lysosomes, which are small organelles that contain enzymes used to break down waste materials and cellular debris. Granular cells can be found in various tissues throughout the body, including the skin, nervous system, and respiratory system.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of granular cells is to help with the breakdown and removal of waste materials. This is done through the action of the enzymes contained within the granules. In addition to this role, granular cells in the skin are involved in the process of inflammation, helping to protect the body from infection and injury.

Associated Diseases[edit | edit source]

There are several diseases and conditions that are associated with granular cells. These include:

  • Granular cell tumor: This is a rare type of tumor that can occur in any part of the body, but is most commonly found in the mouth or skin. It is usually benign (non-cancerous), but can sometimes be malignant (cancerous).
  • Granular cell myoblastoma: This is a type of granular cell tumor that occurs in the muscle tissue. It is also usually benign, but can sometimes become malignant.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for diseases associated with granular cells depends on the specific condition and its severity. For benign granular cell tumors, surgical removal is often the preferred treatment. If the tumor is malignant, additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be necessary.
