HE4
HE4 is a protein that is encoded by the WFDC2 gene in humans. It is also known as Human Epididymis Protein 4. This protein is a member of the whey acidic protein (WAP) family, which is a group of proteins with a characteristic 'four-disulfide core' structure. The WFDC2 gene is located on chromosome 20q12-q13 in humans.
Function[edit | edit source]
HE4 is a secretory protein, which means it is released from cells into the extracellular environment. It is primarily expressed in the epididymis, a part of the male reproductive system. However, it is also found in other tissues, including the respiratory tract and female reproductive tract. The exact function of HE4 is not fully understood, but it is thought to play a role in sperm maturation and fertility.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
HE4 is used as a biomarker in the diagnosis and management of ovarian cancer. It is often elevated in the blood of women with this type of cancer, and its levels can be measured using a blood test. HE4 is also used in combination with CA125, another biomarker, to improve the accuracy of ovarian cancer diagnosis.
