HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is primarily responsible for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The HRSA accomplishes its mission by providing funding and support to health care providers in urban and rural areas, promoting the development of the health care workforce, and improving health equity. The agency oversees organ, bone marrow, and cord blood donation. It also compensates individuals harmed by vaccination, and maintains databases that protect against health care malpractice, waste, fraud and abuse.

Programs and Services[edit | edit source]

HRSA provides a wide range of services and programs designed to improve health outcomes and address health disparities. These include:

  • Primary Health Care: HRSA funds nearly 1,400 health center grantees that operate more than 11,000 clinics, providing primary and preventive care on a sliding fee scale to nearly 23 million people.
  • Health Workforce: HRSA supports the training and education of health professionals and students through grants, scholarships, and loan repayment programs.
  • Maternal and Child Health: HRSA programs provide prenatal care, baby shots, children’s checkups, and care for expectant mothers and children with special health care needs.
  • Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program: HRSA oversees the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which provides a comprehensive system of care that includes primary medical care and essential support services for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured.
  • Rural Health: HRSA provides funding to rural hospitals and health care providers to help them stay open and improve care for the one in five Americans who live in rural areas.
