Helper T cell
Helper T cell is a type of T cell that plays an important role in the immune system, particularly in the adaptive immune system. They help the activity of other immune cells by releasing T cell cytokines. These cells help suppress or regulate immune responses. They are essential in B cell antibody class switching, in the activation and growth of Cytotoxic T cell, and in maximizing bactericidal activity of phagocytes such as macrophages.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Helper T cells are a vital part of the immune system. They are a type of T cell, also known as T lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that play key roles in the immune response. T cells are produced in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus.
Function[edit | edit source]
The main role of Helper T cells is to activate and direct other immune cells. They do this by releasing cytokines, which are chemical messengers that help to stimulate and direct the immune response.
Helper T cells are involved in a variety of immune responses, including:
- Activating B cells to produce antibodies
- Stimulating Cytotoxic T cells to kill infected target cells
- Maximizing the bactericidal activity of phagocytes such as macrophages
Types of Helper T cells[edit | edit source]
There are several different types of Helper T cells, each with a different function. These include:
- Th1 cells: These cells help to stimulate the cytotoxic T cells and are involved in the immune response to intracellular bacteria and viruses.
- Th2 cells: These cells help to stimulate B cells to produce antibodies. They are involved in the immune response to extracellular parasites and allergens.
- Th17 cells: These cells are involved in the immune response to extracellular bacteria and fungi. They also play a role in autoimmune diseases.
- Tfh cells: These cells help B cells to produce high-affinity antibodies. They are involved in the immune response to vaccines and infections.
- Treg cells: These cells help to suppress the immune response, preventing autoimmune diseases and helping to control chronic infections.
