Insulinoma
Insulinoma is a rare tumor of the pancreas that produces excessive amounts of insulin. It is the most common cause of hypoglycemia resulting from endogenous hyperinsulinism.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of insulinoma are due to hypoglycemia and include blurred vision, dizziness, confusion, and unconsciousness. These symptoms are often relieved by eating, which increases blood glucose levels.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of insulinoma is based on the demonstration of inappropriately high levels of insulin in the blood when glucose levels are low. This can be confirmed by a supervised fast, during which blood samples are taken to measure glucose and insulin levels.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The primary treatment for insulinoma is surgical removal of the tumor. In cases where surgery is not possible, medication may be used to manage symptoms.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for insulinoma is generally good, with a high rate of cure following surgical removal. However, in cases where the tumor is malignant, the prognosis can be poor.
