Kauai

Kauai is the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the 21st largest island in the United States. Known also as the "Garden Isle", Kauai lies 105 miles (169 kilometers) across the Kauai Channel, northwest of Oahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The island of Kauai is 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2) in area, making it the 21st largest island in the United States. It is the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the oldest of the main islands.

History[edit | edit source]

The island was likely first settled by Polynesians who arrived from the Marquesas Islands around 500 AD. Some Polynesian navigators may have arrived at Kauai even earlier, possibly as early as 200 AD.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Kauai's economy is dominated by the tourism industry, which is the largest employer on the island. Other significant sectors include agriculture, defense, and health care.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, the island had a resident population of 67,091. The ethnic composition of the population is diverse, with a large number of people of Hawaiian and Asian descent.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Kauai has a tropical rainforest climate (Af) with high rainfall throughout the year. The island's location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean exposes it to steady trade winds and heavy rainfall.

Flora and fauna[edit | edit source]

Kauai is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. Some of these, like the Kauai 'amakihi and the Kauai 'elepaio, are found nowhere else in the world.
