Leucaena leucocephala

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Leucaena leucocephala is a species of small Mimosoid tree that belongs to the legume family, Fabaceae. It is native to the Americas, but has been introduced to tropical regions worldwide. It is commonly known as the "white leadtree", "jumbay", and "white popinac".

Description[edit | edit source]

Leucaena leucocephala is a fast-growing, evergreen tree that can reach up to 20 meters in height. It has a straight, slender trunk and a spreading crown. The leaves are bipinnate, with 4-10 pairs of pinnae, each with 20-40 pairs of leaflets. The flowers are white, fragrant, and arranged in dense globular heads. The fruit is a flat, brown pod, containing several seeds.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Leucaena leucocephala is native to southern Mexico and northern Central America, but is now found in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is often found in disturbed areas, along roadsides, and in abandoned fields. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a wide range of soil types.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Leucaena leucocephala has many uses. It is often planted for soil conservation, reforestation, and as a shade tree. Its wood is used for fuel, construction, and furniture. The leaves and young pods are edible and are often used as fodder for livestock. The seeds are also edible and are sometimes used as a coffee substitute.

Environmental impact[edit | edit source]

While Leucaena leucocephala has many beneficial uses, it can also be an invasive species in some regions. It can form dense thickets that outcompete native vegetation and alter ecosystems. In some areas, it is considered a serious weed and efforts are made to control its spread.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Leucaena leucocephala is easy to cultivate. It can be propagated from seeds, which should be scarified and soaked in hot water before planting. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established.
