Leucocyte

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Leucocyte (also known as a white blood cell or WBC) is a type of cell that is part of the immune system in the body. These cells are responsible for fighting off infections and diseases. There are several different types of leucocytes, each with their own specific functions.

Types of Leucocytes[edit | edit source]

There are five main types of leucocytes, which are classified into two main categories: granulocytes and agranulocytes.

Granulocytes[edit | edit source]

Granulocytes are a type of leucocyte that contain granules in their cytoplasm. These granules contain enzymes that can break down microorganisms. There are three types of granulocytes:

  • Neutrophils - These are the most common type of granulocyte. They are the first to arrive at the site of an infection and are very effective at killing bacteria.
  • Eosinophils - These cells are involved in the response to parasitic infections and allergic reactions.
  • Basophils - These are the least common type of granulocyte. They release histamine during allergic reactions.

Agranulocytes[edit | edit source]

Agranulocytes are a type of leucocyte that do not contain granules in their cytoplasm. There are two types of agranulocytes:

  • Lymphocytes - These cells are involved in the immune response. There are two types of lymphocytes: B cells, which produce antibodies, and T cells, which destroy infected cells.
  • Monocytes - These cells become macrophages when they enter tissues. They are involved in the immune response and can engulf and destroy microorganisms.

Function of Leucocytes[edit | edit source]

The main function of leucocytes is to protect the body from infections and diseases. They do this by identifying and destroying harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. Leucocytes also play a role in the immune response, helping the body to remember and recognize previous infections.
